The Carrarese walls have a characteristic warm tinge; it absorbs and reflects all the nuances of the different tones of lights when it bathes them against the blue of the sky and the deep green of the grass in the ancient moat. The town suddenly appears as if it were enclosed in a setting, a Medieval shell which seems to wrap it and take it away from the ordinary flow of time.

The most ancient fortification in Montagnana is Porta Padova, which is defended by San Zeno Castle, with its imposing donjon of Ezzelino. The building is now seat of a Congress and Exibitions Centre. of the public library and of the Civic Museum. In the museum there are sections allotted to Pre-Roman and Roman remains, others to medieval history, and one to music in Giovanni Martinelli and Aureliano Pertile's honour.

The Fortress of the Trees

click to enlarge -32kAformidable fortress, a real jewel of military architecture. It was ordered by Francesco I the Old Da Carrara and built in only two years in 1360. It was a stronghold in the walls where the town was more exposed to enemy attacks. Since 1963 it has become a fascinating Youth Hostel.
