walls have a characteristic warm tinge; it absorbs and reflects all the
nuances of the different tones of lights when it bathes them against the blue
of the sky and the deep green of the grass in the ancient moat. The
town suddenly appears as if it were enclosed in a setting, a Medieval shell
which seems to wrap it and take it away from the ordinary flow of time.

most ancient fortification in Montagnana is Porta Padova, which is
defended by San Zeno Castle, with its
imposing donjon of Ezzelino. The building
is now seat of a Congress and Exibitions Centre. of the public library
and of the Civic Museum. In the museum there are sections allotted
to Pre-Roman and Roman remains, others to medieval history,
and one to music in Giovanni Martinelli and Aureliano Pertile's honour.

was opened in the Carrarese town-walls by the Venetian in the early 1500s
in order to have a more direct accese to the river Frassine. Thus they made
easier the transport of canvas on the cargo barges bound for the Serenissima
shipyards.

fortress, a real jewel of military architecture. It was ordered by Francesco
I the Old Da Carrara and built in only two years in 1360. It was
a stronghold in the walls where the town was more exposed to enemy attacks.
Since 1963 it has become a fascinating Youth Hostel.
