he Medieval New Year's Eve is a great fest that cannot be organized without visitors. Banners decorating the windows, soldiers, and a small military camp at the entrance of Montagnana dressed in a medieval atmosphere.
Entertainment is provided in downtown streets, under porches, and in the church square. Characters representing scenes of medieval daily life, group of soldiers, and war machines are in the square in front of Saint Zeno Castle (the present Padova Gate). Groups of armed knights walk along the streets, and jesters entertain with jokes and music.
Visitors wearing the "Cape of Montagnana" enter through the "Gate of the Trees" The Honor Guard welcomes the visitors with trumpets, guitars, and banners. The medieval style is a must. Soldiers perform parades and choruses, figurants and visitors' make up a single "corps of actors".
he program of the event of the Medieval Fest of the Red Cape of Montagnana on the 1st January 2012 is:
2.00 pm - arrival in Montagnana, Entrance of the town through the "Gate of the Trees" (the present Legnago Gate) welcomed by the Honor Guard that escort the guests to the centre of town. Enterteinmentn with dance, musicians and jesters in front of the Cathedral. In a military camp archers and armigers practise in front of the war-machines. In the meantime groups of knights cross the town.
3.00 pm - In Vittorio Emanuele square, the Podestà welcomes an important noble family's arrival in town. The notables leave the Town Hall to reach the Cathedral where flag bearers are ready to welcome the authorities. A group of citizens opposes the guest family and gets menacingly close; a group of armirgers rushes to guests' help and a fight breaks out. A final duel solves the controversy and the flag weavers honour the guests.The notables with their followers and crowd enter the church accompanied by a chorus performance.
Drum rolls gather the crowd and the guests wearing the Cape in the square forming around the Castle of Saint Zeno. Then they march towards the city wall. A veronese vanguard suddenly breaks into the town and attacks the camp; two columns of the Guard from the Castle and the wall intervene and manage to push back the enemies.
Music, songs and dance celebrate the victory.
A buffet with enterteinment and music wellcomes the guests wearing the Cape in the Castle courtyard.
Afterward, the audience goes out to immerge into the loudness of the square.
The fest ends at around 6.00p.m..
During the show free winw as much as one likes is served.
It is possible to taste local products at the Medieval Village. Visitors wearing The Cape of Montagnana have a reserved area for the parades, and can also have free drinks and samples regarding local products and specialities.
